Veneman made Unicef executive director

Ann M Veneman, former US Secretary of Agriculture, was appointed the 5th Executive Director of Unicef to lead the UN children's agency.

Veneman was appointed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to succeed outgoing Executive Director Carol Bellamy, says a Unicef press release.

"It is a great honour to lead Unicef, which is truly one of the world's great institutions," Veneman said yesterday on her first official day at Unicef headquarters in New York.

She said among her top priorities would be ensuring that Unicef works to advance the Millennium Development Goals.
