Raju Kidnapping
Abductor gets 30 yrs

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a youth to 30 years' rigorous imprisonment for kidnapping a six-year-old boy Raju for trafficking in October 1999.Judge Monowara Begum of the Second Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression pronounced the verdict in presence of convict Mohammad Mamun of Nawabganj in the city's Lalbagh area. In her judgement, the court said that the convict was given life in jail considering his age though he should be awarded capital punishment for his heinous offence. Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the court recorded statements of 11 prosecution witnesses. In the case filed with Lalbagh Police Station, it was alleged that at about 11:00am on October 9, 1999 the accused kidnapped Raju from in front of their Duriaungul Lane residence in Lalbagh and took him to Faridpur for trafficking. But Faridpur Sadarpur Police arrested Mamun and rescued the victim from his possession the same day. Later, victim's mother Julekha Begum filed an abduction case against Mamun on November 2.
