Robbery spree in city

Robbers looted cash and gold estimated at over Tk 1 lakh from the house of a dance director at Uttara and muggers took away Tk 47,000 after shooting a contractor at Azimpur in the capital yesterday.On Sunday, robbers took away cash and valuables said to be worth about Tk 50,000 from a house at Pallabi in Mirpur, while another group looted Tk 29,000 from a wholesale flower market in Tongi. Five robbers entered the house of Aziz Reza, a dance director of Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, in Kamarpara cutting open the grill of his kitchen on the ground floor at 3:30am yesterday. Taking hostage Aziz's son Sony Reza, 14, at gunpoint, the robbers tied him up to force the family to hand in the keys of the lockers. Aziz's sister Afroza was on the ground floor while Aziz was asleep on the first floor at that time. Taking gold ornaments weighing about 10 tolas and Tk 12,000 in cash, the robbers asked Sony and his aunt to open entrance to the first floor. As they refused to comply, the robbers stabbed Sony and his aunt Afroza Begum in the head. Aziz raised an alarm making the robbers to flee. Hearing Aziz's cry, neighbours phoned the police. Officer-in-charge of Uttara Police Station Akteruzzaman Kibria took Sony and Afroza to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Police could not arrest anyone until yesterday evening. At Azimpur, three to four muggers stopped Public Works Department contractor Tapash Ghosh, 35, when he was crossing the road at Azimpur to catch a bus for Gulistan. He drew Tk 77,900 from Uttara Bank, Azimpur Branch, at around 10:00am yesterday. Having failed to snatch the moneybag from Tapash, the muggers shot him in the right hand and took away the bag. Onlookers rushed profusely bleeding Tapash to the DMCH. He was later shifted to the Orthopaedics Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. In the other incident on Sunday, a group of five to six robbers barged into the first-floor house of Yunus Mia on road No. 10 in block B of section-12 at 8:00pm. The robbers took at gunpoint Tk 3,000 in cash, three tolas of gold, a mobile phone and a camera before leaving the house. In Tongi, six robbers looted Tk 19,000 at gunpoint from the shop of Sobhan Mia at the wholesale flower market in Tongi Bazar at 6:45pm on Sunday. They also looted Tk 10,000 from the adjacent shop of Liakat. As Dulal, 30, a resident of the locality, raised an alarm, the robbers shot him in the chest and hit another local, Monsur Ahmed, in the head with revolver butt prior to fleeing the scene. Dulal was first admitted at a local hospital and moved to the DMCH yesterday afternoon. Tongi police filed a case but failed to arrest anyone until yesterday evening.
