2 criminals killed in 'crossfire'

Two criminals including a top cadre of outlawed Biplabi Communist Party (BCP) were killed in 'crossfire' between police and their accomplices in Dhaka and Kushtia yesterday.

Ramzan Ali Khan, 32, a listed criminal, was killed at Garan Chatbari in Mirpur in the capital.

His family, however, alleged three police informants helped the law-enforcers arrest and 'kill' Ramzan, 32, following a land dispute.

"Criminals led by informant Nizam grabbed unlawfully Ramzan's Mirpur house two years ago and have been threatening us with death since then," said his mother Shahida Khatun.

Police on Friday arrested Ramzan, an accused in the Dhaka City Corporation ward commissioner Saidur Rahman Newton murder case, from Munshiganj.

Shahida alleged a police sub-inspector had demanded Tk 3 lakh for his son's release and threatened to kill Ramzan in 'crossfire' if they failed to give the sum.

Police however disputed the allegations, saying Ramzan, chargesheeted accused in four murder cases, was killed in 'crossfire' with his accomplices.

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital sources, however, said three fingers of Ramzan's one hand were severed and his right thigh bore a stab mark. The leg also had bullet wounds caused by point-blank shotgun firing, they added.

Mirpur police said they took Ramzan to Garan Chatbari to nab his associates, who opened fire on the law-enforcers, and he died there in 'crossfire' at around 2:00am yesterday.

Police seized a gun and a revolver with 11 bullets.

Kushtia
Ifarmal alias Ifa, 36, a BCP cadre, was killed when police and his accomplices locked in an armed encounter at Amla village in Mirpur upazila, reports our Kushtia correspondent.

Mirpur police said they arrested Ifa from Amla when he was holding a meeting with other outlaws at about 4:00am.

They said the outlaws attacked the police to snatch Ifa away but the police countered the attack and Ifa died in 'crossfire'.

He was a convict in a murder case and accused of 10 other criminal charges.
