Sit-in Tuesday if Faizee stays
SC Bar warns CJ

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday warned of a sit-in demonstration at the chief justice's entrance to the Supreme Court on Tuesday if additional High Court judge Faisal Mahmud Faizee is allowed to sit on his bench Monday.

The SCBA members yesterday marched around the Supreme Court premises for the first time ever in a procession carrying black flags to demand Faizee's removal.

Bangladesh Bar Council in an unprecedented move Sunday cancelled the enrolment certificate of Faizee on the grounds of providing false information about his LLB exam results during enrolment.

More than 100 lawyers led by SCBA leaders took out the procession at around 1:00pm chanting, "We have one demand, Faizee's resignation!"

Later, they staged a rally where the speakers urged Faizee once again to resign and Chief Justice Syed JR Mudassir Husain not to allow Faizee to sit on any bench.

Otherwise, the agitating SCBA members on Tuesday will stage the sit-in from 8:30am to 10:15 am. The SCBA will announce its next programme from the sit-in.

SCBA President Mahbubey Alam at the rally said, "On April 24, the Bar Council at a meeting cancelled your (Faizee's) certificate. But at that time the attorney general (who was the ex-officio chairman of the Council) and Advocate Sheikh Razzak Ali ( a pro-government lawyer and Council member) did not come to save you. This cancellation has been a unanimous decision. This government will not be able to save you."

Pointing at the chief justice, Alam said, "Do not lower your image by saving a judge. For the sake of saving the image of the judiciary, refrain from designating Faizee any bench."

Former SCBA president and senior Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder said, "Faizee is still a judge with a fake certificate. The resignation phase has just started. The attorney general has resigned. There will be more resignations."
