SC Bar president pledges to intensify movement

Newly-elected president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) yesterday pledged to intensify the ongoing united movement of the lawyers to help establish rule of law and separate the judiciary from the executive.

"The SCBA is not only a professional organisation but also an institution to realise the rights of the people. We are carrying out the movement from the 80s to achieve the rights of the people and we will continue it," Advocate Mahbubey Alam told BDNEWS at his office.

He urged the lawyers, irrespective of their of party affiliations and opinions, to assist him in taking ahead the movement.

Mahbubey Alam said had the four-party alliance-backed lawyers been in the race, he would have got more votes.

"I am very shocked to know that some pro-government lawyers forced a number of voters to refrain from casting votes. Most of the lawyers, including law officers of the Attorney General's office, support me, " he said.

The SCBA president said the election commission did not get any injunction order on the holding of the poll.

Earlier in the morning, the outgoing committee handed over the charge to the new committee.
