Police retrieved the decomposed body of a man from Sabujbagh who was strangled a few days ago while two people, including a housewife, were shot in separate incidents in Khilgaon in the city yesterday. Tipped off, Sabujbagh police recovered the body of the unidentified man aged about 32 from an isolated place at Green Model Town at about 2:15pm. Police said criminals might have strangled the man with a scarf eight to ten days ago. Police seized the scarf and sent the body to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy. In another incident, Suraiya Begum, 40, was shot in the abdomen when rival gangs exchanged gunfire at a kitchen market at Purbo Hajipara near Rampura in Khilgaon at about 11:00am. Suraiya, a resident of Tikatuli, went to the market to meet her brother-in-law, a trader of the market. She was rushed to the DMCH, where doctors successfully operated upon her. In a bid to establish supremacy in the area, local gangs 'Ripon group' and 'Tushar group' were involved in the firefight, the police said. The law enforcers had not made any arrests in this connection as of 7:30pm yesterday. Meanwhile, muggers shot and wounded rickshaw-puller Mohammad Saju, 18, and snatched away Tk 200 and his rickshaw near the post office in Khilgaon at about 4:00 am. Saju's elder brother, Nurul Amin, said a gang of four attacked Nurul near the post office to snatch his money and rickshaw when he was going to deposit the rickshaw to its owner. "As he tried to resist one of the criminals shot him in the abdomen and went away with the rickshaw and the cash," Amin said. Saju is undergoing treatment at the DMCH.
