Toyota, Nissan hit new milestones in US sales

Japan's leading automakers Toyota and Nissan reported new sales milestones in the US market, with Toyota reporting its best-ever quarter and month and Nissan sales topping one million for its fiscal year. Toyota Motor Sales USA, reported its best ever sales month of 203,223 units, an increase of 12.3 percent from March of last year. Toyota also posted its best-ever first quarter in 48 years of business in the United States with sales of 507,236, up 10.6 percent over the same period last year. "Spurred by escalating oil prices, the demand for fuel-efficient vehicles has definitely stepped up," said Jim Press, executive vice president and of the US arm of Toyota, citing strong interest in the compact Toyota Corolla, the Prius hybrid gasoline-electric car and the new Scion compact nameplate. "Corolla and Scion posted formidable gains and sales of our Prius hybrid reached an all-time high," he said. Nissan North America meanwhile closed out its fiscal year with US sales of 1,013,295 and monthly sales of 105,804.
