The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) under-13 football festival begins today at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP). Two different selections of the hosts (Bangladesh and Bangladesh A) will play in the meet where Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan are the other participating teams. "No team can clinch the championship because there are no points for winning. This is a friendship meet. The tournament will help the youngsters to improve their skills and sense of tactics. Overall it is for educating the young players about the game" said AFC programme manager Jita Singh at a press conference yesterday at the BKSP, the country's lone sports institute. The players who will impress will get a green card in recognition. There are no red or yellow cards in the festival. Instead the referees will advise them about fair play. On the fifth day there will be a coaching session and a total of 21 coaches and 16 referees and 108 players will take part in the exercise. After that, the coaches and referees will get AFC Licence-C and the players will be given certificates. The trainee referees will conduct the festival matches. The AFC has given 35,000 US dollars to Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to arrange the event. The AFC is arranging five other similar festivals across Asia. All the 44 member countries of AFC are taking part in the festival except Saudi Arabia. "Nine young players have been admitted to BKSP following last year's under-14 tournament and we will try to pick some new talents from this meet," said BFF general secretary Anwarul Haque Helal, who was also present at the media conference along BFF president SA Sultan.
