Jayosree Kar Jaya: An actress with a mission

A village girl awaits the return of her beloved who has gone to the city to earn his living. When after a long time this young girl finally meets her beloved she is being trafficked by a pimp near a border area. To her horror and anguish, she discovers that her beloved is committing the same crime of which she is a victim. This is the story of the stage play Meenkannya and the actress who plays the character appropriately and skillfully is Jayosree Kar Jaya, a promising face in the entertainment media. Jaya began her acting career back in 1987 with a substitute role in a stage play of the theatre group Arindam, when she was a college student in Chittagong. She performed different plays including Ele Bele, Pap-Punya, Lal Shalu and Tora Shab Jayadhwani Kar with the theatre group. "Initially I could not realise the depth of this performing art," says Jaya, " However, when I became mature enough to realise the truth I thought I should go to Dhaka and act in the mainstream theatre productions." After arriving in Dhaka, Jaya acted in Hay Badan, a production of Natya Kendra. Based on a story by Girish Karnad, Tauquir Ahmed directed the play in 1994. She received applause for her performance in the play. After the play she acted in Crucible and Bichchhu, two other productions of Arindam. Jaya performed in two stage-plays Meenkanya and Dukhini under the awareness programme of Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts (BITA), a social welfare organisation. The latter one was a joint venture with Pakistan. With these productions she travelled to many places to raise awareness against human trafficking such as Malda, Beharampur, Kandi, Kolkata and other places inside the country where trafficking is a major problem. At present she is on a tour in Agartala to stage Meenkannya in response to an invitation from the Tripura Shangshkritik Samannay Kendra. "The play, written by Masum Reza and directed by Pijush Bandyapadhaya, has received a tremendous response," says Jaya. Among her performances on television, Joar Bhata(the first mega serial), , Ek Janamey, Sporsher Bairey, Chena Dukkha Achena Shukh and Baba are noteworthy. At present, she is working in a new serial Shabnam, written and directed by Proshanto Bardhan, featuring Pijush, Jaya Ahsan, Jamaluddin Hossain and Sharmin Shila. She has performed in a guest appearance in the film Wrong Number. "But I am more interested in alternative films and playing character roles," she says. An interior designer by profession, Jaya feels comfortable in acting on stage. As she says, "I enjoy working on stage because it gives me the greatest artistic satisfaction."
