India VAT strike draws mixed response on day two

A nation-wide strike called to protest the launch of a Value Added Tax (VAT) across India drew a mixed response on the second day Thursday, with many stores re-opening for business, traders' associations said. Some markets in the capital New Delhi were back to their usual bustling selves while in others many shops remained shuttered. "We are totally against VAT," said Sushil Kumar Gupta, a shopkeeper in the upmarket Defence Colony shopping complex in south Delhi.
