UEFA Champions League
Mourinho banned, Chelsea fined

Chelsea were fined 75,000 Swiss francs ($62,810) and coach Jose Mourinho given a two-match touchline ban by UEFA on Thursday for bringing the game into disrepute.

The London club had alleged Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard visited referee Anders Frisk during halftime of the first leg Champions League game at the Nou Camp on February 23.

Mourinho, also fined 20,000 Swiss francs ($16,750), must now 'sit out' both legs of the quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.

Assistant Steve Clarke and security officer Les Miles have been reprimanded for their part in the affair -- meaning Clarke will be free to stand in for Mourinho.

Chelsea had also been charged for the team's late arrival on the pitch in the second half and Mourinho's failure to attend the post-match media conference.

UEFA had accused Chelsea of "deliberately creating a poisoned and negative ambience."

In a statement the European governing body said: "Mourinho... will have to sit out the quarterfinal tie against Bayern Munich subject to an appeal."

English Premier League leaders Chelsea, who beat Barca 5-4 on aggregate, play Bayern in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie on April 6 with the return in Germany six days later.

Chelsea and Mourinho have three days in which to appeal but club chairman Bruce Buck, who attended the hearing, said that it was unlikely that they would.

He said that Chelsea were pleased with what he called a "full and fair hearing."

"We would like to put this incident behind us and we are not likely to appeal," he told Sky TV, but he said they nonetheless would wait until they had made a fuller examination of the written verdict.
