Court orders army to try captain in murder case

A Khulna court ordered the Bangladesh Army on March 24 to try Captain Naeem in a Court Martial for his alleged involvement last year in the murder of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) contractor Azim Sarder.

Khulna District and Sessions Judge AKM Ishtiaque Hossain passed the order on the basis of a probe report by the now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption (Bac).

The army authority was also ordered to inform the court regarding the action taken against Captain Naeem.

According to court sources, Kalu Sarder, father of Azim, filed a petition with the court on March 4 last year complaining that his son was beaten to death by Captain Naeem for not paying a bribe of Tk 50,000.

Naeem was the operation commander of the local joint forces camp at Rayer Mahal under Khalishpur upazila of Khulna city where the murder of Azim, a listed criminal according to the Sonadanga Police Station, took place.

According to the petition, Captain Naeem arrested Azim Sarder with illegal arms from his house in the city's Shibbari area in February of last year. Kalu Sarder, however, alleged that the arms case was plotted against Azim as he refused to pay the bribe.

The army officer also threatened Azim with death for failing to pay the bribe in full, the petition said.

The court forwarded the petition to the Khulna district anti-corruption bureau to investigate allegations that Captain Naeem received bribe and also directed Jahanabad Cantonment authorities to take the necessary action in connection with the allegation that Naeem beat Azim Sarder to death.

Upon thorough investigation, the Khulna Bureau of Anti-Corruption submitted a report confirming that Captain Naeem demanded the bribe.

Captain Naeem was called back to army headquarters a few days after the incident.
