Power generation viable option in waste management
Experts tell discussion


Power generation by recycling waste garbage could be a viable option in waste management, said the experts at a discussion on Wednesday.

The discussion was organised jointly by Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) and the European Commission at the Brac Centre Inn in the city to discuss the findings of a study titled 'Integrated Management and Safe Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste' in the Least Developed Asian Countries (LDACs).

The study gives a comparative picture of existing waste management systems in Bangladesh, Nepal, Germany and the UK.

"Waste management approach varies according to specific situation," said Prof Mohammad Alamgir of Kuet,

Vice-chancellor of Brac University Prof Jamillur Reza Chowdhury said an effective means of power generation recycling waste garbage could be a viable option in waste management.

The Kuet VC Prof Ehsanul Haque said lack of public awareness in how to deal with the garbage properly constitutes the major problem in municipality waste management.
