Ekushey in Old Dhaka
Mohammad Sultan B.Sc.(Hons), M.Sc.(Economics) Dhaka
Ekushey February is the day of our mother language. Salam, Barkat, Rafiq, Jabbar sacrified their lives for Bangla language. Every year we celebrate this day. There is no nation in the world that had to sacrifice so much for the language. Now 21 February is observed all over the world. In Old Dhaka, many Muslims and Hindus live together. Hindus mostly live in the Shakharibazar, Tatibazar, Laxmibazar areas. Ekushey is important for every person who speaks Bangla, regardless of religion. The locals speak a language which is not Bangla proper. But that doesn't matter. We can have many languages, but Bangla must have its due recognition and supreme position.
