An appeal to UK government
Professor M Zahidul Haque Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Dhaka-1207.
It is gathered from a press report that the Bangladeshi restaurants are facing closure in the United Kingdom due to visa restrictions imposed by the British government. Hundreds of Bangladeshi-owned restaurants are reportedly struggling to find people to work as kitchen porters and waiters. Earlier, around 1,900 Bangladeshis were given 12-month visa to come to Britain on specific jobs under a Sector Based Scheme (SBS), but now the scheme has been labelled a flop due to the authority's back turn from the initial commitments.May I sincerely request British Prime Minister Tony Blair to please look into the matter and take some urgent steps so that restaurant workers from Bangladesh can have easy access to Britain. There is no doubt that Bangladeshis in Britain are working as bona fide workers and Bangladeshi-Britons are living there as bona fide citizens. Both the groups are contributing effectively to the socio-economic development of that country.
