Our lost dream
Golam Rosul Maruf Dhaka College, Dhaka
One night I was reading a paragraph based on 'The Victory Day' for my imminent HSC examinations. I tried to learn it by rote for its importance in our exam. The last line of that paragraph was "our dream came true through our Victory Day". The next morning I prepared myself for going to my teacher's house. I rented a rickshaw to the Elephant Road. Suddenly I asked the rickshaw-puller about his age during the liberation war. He looked back at me and said that he was a freedom fighter. His words rendered me speechless. After coming from my teacher's house, I thought about the present condition of my beloved country. The anti-liberation forces are powerful, but a freedom fighter has to struggle all day long to survive. After that I deducted the last line of my paragraph, as we are yet to fulfil our dream of independence. We cannot ensure the basic rights of our people, the freedom of press. We cannot make our country economically well off, non-communal and free from prejudices. Our prominent writers and intellectuals are not free from the black magic of fundamentalists. So how can I add this line to my paragraph? I would like to ask my honourable superiors with due respect that can we, the new generation, expect a day when we will say with pride that we really find our dreams fulfilled?
