Moudud rebuts US HR report

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday dismissed the US Human Rights report on Bangladesh saying it was one sided and 'not objective'.

The human rights report-2004 was released by the US State Department in Washington on February 28 with observations about human rights situations in 196 countries of the world.

"I think the report is too much one sided that speaks of only the negative things. It is not objective," Moudud told the news agency in his initial reaction.

The law minister claimed that the government achieved a lot of progress in strengthening human rights in Bangladesh, which should have been reflected in the report.

"The full report is not in my hand. I hope they have included the government efforts in upholding human rights of our people," Moudud said.

Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan said the human rights situation should be seen from perspectives of respective countries. "I don't agree with the report," Khan told electronic media yesterday evening.

The report on Bangladesh chapter observed that "poor human rights record worsened in Bangladesh and the government continued to commit numerous abuses."
