Uttara Project houses allotted amid tight security

Amid tight security, State Minister for Education Ehsanul Haque Milon yesterday inaugurated the Uttara Housing Project at Syedur, the largest such project in the country.

He also handed over documents to some of the allottees. Thirty-six per cent of the houses have been allotted to Bangalees and sixty-six per cent to Biharis.

There are 1000 houses in the project, constructed at a cost of over k five crore. The construction was done by army.

The inauguration was deferred on three occasions earlier following clashes by Bangalees and Biharis over share of the houses.

Police earlier on the day arrested, Dr Abul Hassan Bulu, who had led Bangalees in their agitation for houses in the project.

The Bangalees had been demanding all the houses in the project. They were opposing allotment of houses to Biharis, saying they had opposed the Liberation War and killed people.

Presided over by Nilphamari Deputy Commissioner Robindronath Roy Chowdhury, the inaugural function held in the project area was addressed by, among others, former MP Shahrin Islam Tulin, ruling Party MP from Saidpur Amzad Hossen Sarker, ruling party MP from Dinajpur-4 constituency Akhtaruzzaman, district BNP General Secretary Anisul Arefin Chowdhury, and Saidpur UNO Samsul Alam

Speaking on the occasion, Milon said whoever born in Bangladesh is a Bangladeshi. There is no question of Bangalee or Bihari.

Amzad Hossen Sarker urged the Deputy Commissioner to drop the names of innocent people from the arms-snatching case, filed last year after a clash with police.

On March 21 last year, Bangalees clashed with police leaving at least 60 people including the Syedpur UNO and ASP injured.

Police then filed an arms-snatching case, accusing 300 Bangalees.
