Women's Reserved Seats
Bill passed to allow time extension

Elections to 45 reserved seats for women in parliament will have to be completed on or before March 7 this year according to a bill passed by the House last night.

The bill provides for extending the time from 45 days to 90 days to complete the election since the date of enforcement of the Jatiya Sangsad (Reserved Women Seat) Election Act, 2004 on December 8 last year.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Maudud Ahmed piloted the bill, which was passed by voice vote.

With the election of 45 women members, the strength of national parliament will increase from 300 to 345.

The 14th amendment of the constitution introduced 45 reserved seats for women.
