Mob beat police, snatch shotgun

An angry mob yesterday beat policemen and snatched away a shotgun with its bullets at Jaat Halida village under Gabtali upazila in the district.

Local influential persons Abdur Rauf and Saiful Islam were trying to grab a land possessed by their brother Yunus, a freedom fighter, for couple of months, locals said.

Following the case filed by Yunus against Rauf and Saiful, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Habib of Gabtali Police Station issued a letter to Yunus, asking him to settle the matter.

Yunus then filed a case against ASI Habib seeking order of non-interference from the local police station.

The court order went in favour of Yunus, but the two brothers along with the police went to grab the land yesterday at 11:00am.

Angry locals surrounded the police, beat them up and snatched away the shotgun and bullets.

Officer-in-Charge of Gabtali Police Station Latifur Rahman admitted the incident of gun snatching.

None was arrested in this connection until yesterday evening.
