CPA removes CCC's gangway

Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) yesterday removed a huge gangway installed by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) in the river Karnaphuli. Sources said the CCC installed the 92-ft-long and 5-ft-wide gangway to facilitate its ferry service at Guptakhal point of the river without the permission of the CPA. The gangway, installed some nine kilometers off the port through piling the riverbed, posed a great threat to the navigability and the course of the river. The CPA in a notice urged the CCC to remove the gangway by January 25 but it failed to do so, sources said. The drive, led by CPA Magistrate Md Munir Chowdhury, started at 9:00am and continued till 3:00pm. A huge contingent of police and ansars were deployed.
