Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has enforced a daylong strike at Chittagong University (CU) yesterday to protest the January 27 grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Habiganj that killed former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria and four other activists.Although no classes were held at the university, scheduled examinations held in few departments. In the early morning, police clubbed the BCL activists as they were putting up a barricade at Battali Railway Station in the city to disrupt shuttle train service. Four activists -- Jewel, Mahfuz, Tuhin and Zia -- were injured, campus sources said. The BCL men then rushed to the Chowdhury Hat Rail Station and put up a barricade on the rail track. When the train reached the station en route to the university, the BCL activists forced the student to get off the train. However, the shuttle train finally reached the campus with no students aboard. A huge number of policemen were deployed on the campus and at the gate number one to avert any untoward incident. Meanwhile, the BCL staged a sit-in programme at the gate number one and announced that it will hold a rally on the campus on February 7 to protest the police action on the activists. BCL General Secretary Md Ershad Hossain told this correspondent that they would launch an indefinite siege programme on the campus if the police intervene in the February 7 rally. On the other hand, the CU Teachers' Association (Cuta) has announced a daylong programme protesting the killing of Shah AMS Kibria. They will wear black badges and took out a silent procession in the city on February 7. The association took the decision at an executive committee meeting yesterday, with its President Prof Dr Md Nurul Anwar in the chair.
