Rapist jailed for 30 years

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a rapist to 30-year rigorous imprisonment.

The convict, Kala Guddu, raped a five-year-old girl in Mohammadpur in the city on February 18, 2003.

Judge Kaniz Akhter Nasrina Khanam of the Fourth Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression gave the verdict in presence of Guddu of Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur.

After cross-examination of 10 prosecution witnesses, the judge pronounced the judgement at a jam-packed courtroom.

In the case filed with Mohammadpur Police Station, victim's father Mohammad Ismail alleged his neighbour Guddu took his daughter to his place and raped her when she was playing in front of the house.

Locals caught Guddu when he was fleeing the spot and handed him over to police.

The investigation officer pressed charge on April 29 and the court framed charge on October 6, 2003.

Special Public Prosecutor Mohammad Akhteruzzaman appeared for the state, while Advocate Mahmuda Akhter defended the accused.
