Rally accuses coalition of killing under a blueprint
3 shown arrested in Kibria murder case

Ruling BNP-Jamaat-led coalition has drawn a blueprint for eliminating popular and progressive political leaders one by one, said the central leaders of the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League at a condolence meeting in Habiganj yesterday.

The leaders were addressing the condolence meeting to commemorate the deaths of AL lawmaker SAMS Kibria and four others in a grenade attack on January 27 at Baidderbazar in Habiganj.

Chaired by the president of district unit AL, Mushfiq Hossain Chowdhury, the meet took place at Shirishtala.

Meanwhile, eight days into the carnage, police showed three people arrested under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code and implicated them in the case.

Speakers at yesterday's meeting emphasised a political alliance of the like-minded parties to launch a vigorous oust-government movement and said in absence of it, such killings will continue.

AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil said the government has failed to provide security for the public to the members of the parliament. He alleged it has been carrying out indiscriminate killings patronising the communal forces.

AL presidium member Tofail Ahmed alleged the superintendent of police and officer-in-charge have been transferred, as they had identified the criminals behind the carnage.

"I wonder why the deputy commissioner was not transferred," he added.

If they were transferred for a breach of security, the prime minister should also step down for her failure to provide security for an MP, AL presidium member Suranjit Sengupta said.

The local administration took comprehensive security measures for the meeting attended by several thousands supporters.

The leaders and activists of the AL its allies thronged to the meeting venue in processions, turning it into a human sea.

AL leaders Asaduzzaman Noor, MP, Dewan Farid Gazi, Abdus Shahid, MP, Workers Party leader Fazle Hossain Badsha, CPB General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim, Moinuddin Khan Badal of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Dilip Barua of Samyabadi Dal, among others, addressed the meet.

Eight days into the Baidderbazar carnage, police yesterday showed three people --Shah Alam, Joynal Abedin and Wahid-- arrested under Section 54 of the CrPC and implicated them in the case.

The arrestees were also taken on an eight-day remand for interrogation.

Deputy Inspector General of Police of Sylhet range AKM Mahfuzul Haque said the arrestees were produced before the District Magistrate's Court in Habiganj yesterday with a petition for 10-day remand for each. The court however granted eight- day remand.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and intelligence agencies picked them up from Baidderbazar area and nearby villages on Sunday and handed them over to Habiganj Sadar Police Station yesterday.

The officer-in-charge of the police station is investigation officer of one of the two cases concerning the grenade attack.

Police yesterday sent Kala Jamal, brought to Habiganj from Sylhet three days ago for quizzing on the January 27 incident, back to Sylhet after interrogation, and showed him arrested in an arms case filed with a police station in Sylhet city.

Sources said police have so far picked up around 15 people and continue to quiz them about the grenade attack.
