Fresh hartal on Feb 3, 5, 6

The main opposition Awami League (AL) and its allies will enforce another spell of countrywide hartal on February 3, 5 and 6 in protest against the killing of lawmaker and former minister Shah AMS Kibria and four AL activists in the January 27 grenade attack.

The last day of the fresh shutdown, February 6, coincides with the beginning of the two-day summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) in Dhaka.

While the left-leaning 11-party alliance limits its hartal programme to a single day on February 3 (6:00am to 6:00pm), the AL and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) called for a 36-hour non-stop hartal starting from 6:00am on February 5.

Virtually there will be a four-day shutdown across the country after Wednesday, as the respite in between the two hartal is a Friday (February 4), the weekly holiday.

AL President Sheikh Hasina declared the fresh hartal programme at the party's Dhanmondi office yesterday at the end of a 60-hour hartal. The JSD and 11-party also announced their programme from separate press conferences in the capital.

Apart from the hartal programme, the AL will bring out mourning processions on February 4 and hold rallies across the country on February 7 and 8 to protest the killing of Kibria and four others in the grenade attack on a party rally.
