Nurses demand health secy's removal, submit memo to PM

Leaders of Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Association (BDNA) yesterday submitted a memorandum to the prime minister demanding removal of the health secretary and the two top most officials of the Nursing Directorate.

They also demanded fresh appointment to these posts on the basis of qualifications.

BDNA in its memorandum made allegations of bribery and corruption against Health Secretary AFM Sarwar Kamal, Director of Nurse Khodeja-Tul-Kobra and Acting Deputy Director Khadija Begum. It said the three take bribe from nurses and other staff members for transfer and appointments.

"As many as 800 nurses had been transferred without any reason," said Kazi Ummay Salma, the president of BDNA.

"We had long been demanding ouster of these crooked officials but nothing happened till today," said Shahjahan Hawladar, the secretary general of BDNA.

"We will go for tougher programmes including human chain, hunger strike and laying siege to the nursing directorate if the government does meet our demands immediately," he added.

Health Secretary AFM Sarwar Kamal termed the allegations false and said the persons who had made those allegations, do not represent the interests of the nurses.

He said stern actions would be taken against them.
