3 die in custody, 'crossfire'

Two persons including a top cadre of an outlawed outfit died in 'crossfire' with police in Dhaka and Chuadanga yesterday while one died in the custody of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the capital. Dhaka Manik alias Yunus, 28, died reportedly in crossfire with police on a construction site in city's Balurmath area early yesterday. Badda police arrested Manik and Masud Parvez at Post Office Lane of Sonakatara in East Badda at 8:00pm on Friday night and allegedly recovered a pistol and eight bullets from Manik's possession. Following leads extracted from the two, a police team taking Manik with them raided Aftabnagar project site at Balurmath area at 4:05am. The instant they reached the site Manik's associates, lying in wait there, opened fire on them, said Badda police. Police fired in return. Manik while attempting an escape got shot and died on the spot, said police adding that Manik's accomplices managed to flee the scene. Police said that they had recovered a light-gun (LG) and few rounds of used bullets. Police sent his body to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy. The morgue sources said the body bore four bullets in the chest, back and head. Badda police said Manik was an extortionist and he used to carry illegal firearms. They could not give any instance of his having criminal record until 7:30pm last night. In a separate incident in Sutrapur, alleged criminal Yusuf, 25, died in Rab custody. Rab men arrested him at Dayaganj area at about 2:30pm yesterday. Accused in five cases for robbery, murder attempt and other crimes, Yusuf was later taken to Rab office in Tikatuli. Rab sources said Yusuf fell ill during interrogation and was rushed to the DMCH, where doctors declared him dead on arrival at 6:00pm. Hospital sources said he was beaten to death. Chuadanga Nyamat Ali alias Nyiat, an operative of Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Janajuddha), was killed in crossfire with police in Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga early yesterday. Police said they arrested Niyamat from a Dhaka bound passenger bus on Friday evening. He used a different name on the passenger register of the coach, police said. Under interrogation by police he admitted involvement with the underground party and confessed to possessing firearms hidden somewhere at Bhogalbadi village in Alamdanga upazila. Police said they took Niyamat to the village to retrieve the firearms. When they reached Bhogalbadi field at about 2.45am, PBCP cadres fired on them. Police returned fire resulting in a half-hour gunfight. Police said Niyamat while trying to escape from the police van got caught in crossfire and died on the spot. Police recovered one shutter gun and five bullets from the scene. Nyamat stood accused in several cases filed with Alamdanga and Sadar Police Stations. BSS adds Niamat died in crossfire when a shootout broke out between PBCP cadres and a joint team of Rab and police.
