PM asks JCD to rid politics of vices

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday directed the leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) to work towards cleansing student politics of vices and removing chaos from campuses.

She cautioned that anyone who indulges in wrongdoing and injustice would not be sparedeven those who belong to her party or are loyal to her.

"So, acts of terrorism won't be tolerated…there is no place for terror in the party," the prime minister told the leaders and workers of her party's student wing at a grand meet at Shatayu Angon at Ramna Park in the capital.

"Only politics is not fair enoughyour prime task is to acquire knowledge through studying attentively," Khaleda, also chairperson of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), told a huge gathering of students marking the 26th anniversary of the student front.

She asked the JCD leaders and workers to groom themselves as worthy citizens to steer the future leadership of the country.

The prime minister inaugurated the function by hoisting national flag and releasing pigeons.

Party song `Prothom Bangladesh Amar, Shesh Bangladesh' was rendered as the prime minister appeared on the dais.

Appreciating the present peaceful co-existence among various student organisations on the campus, she said this camaraderie will have to be sustained--and as the biggest organisation the onus of ensuring this lies with the JCD.

She regretted that the situation was reverse when her party was in the opposition and the then ruling party's student front forcefully dominated campuses and halls.

JCD President Shahabuddin Laltu presided over the function conducted by its General Secretary Azizul Bari Helal.

Our DU Correspondent adds: A new central committee of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was formed yesterday with Azizul Bari Helal and Shafiul Bari Babu as president and general secretary.

The names of the other member of the committee will be announced later, a press release of the BNP said.
