The disabled need training, not pity for rehabilitation
Speakers tell discussion marking International Day of Disabled Persons

Speakers at discussion meeting yesterday called upon people of all walks of life to help the disabled become worthy citizens. It was a moral responsibility of the society to stand beside the disabled and give them equal opportunities so that they can led a normal life, they said. The discussion meeting was arranged by the Satkhira district administration and the Social Welfare Department in observance of the 13th International Day of Disabled. Held at the Sadar upazila auditorium, it addressed by, among others, Satkhira ADC (general) Humayun Kabir, Prof SMA Wahed, Magistrate Nayeb Ali, Hassan Mahmud of Rishilpi, a local NGO and Mizanur Rahman. Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department Asaduzzaman presided over the function. The disabled people need a little help rather than pity to be established in society and lead a normal life, the ADC said and urged the NGOs and philanthropists to come forward with programmes. He also assured all possible government support in this regard. Other speakers said disabled persons are a part of the society. Some disabled people also addressed the function. They said they can lead a normal life if opportunity is given and are trained in different vocations. Earlier, a procession brought out from Shahid Abur Razzak Park with many disabled people's participation paraded the main streets of the town. several hundreds people from all walks of life took part the procession. The discussion meeting was followed by a an art competition, participated by disabled people.
