Rangamati freedom fighters, disabled break hunger on promise of remedy

Freedom fighters and the disabled of Rangamati yesterday broke their fast unto death six hours into the programme on assurance from authorities that their demands will be met.They were protesting at the violation of quota system for the freedom fighters and disabled in recruitment at Rangamati Hill District Council (RHDC). The district units of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Amra Muktijoddhar Santan, Muktijoddha Jubo Command and Muk-o-Badhir Kalyan Samity (organisation of the hearing and speech handicapped) began the hunger strike in front of the RHDC at 9:00am. But they cancelled the programme when RHDC Chairman Maniklal Dewan and Municipality Chairman Habibur Rahman assured them of meeting their demands at 2:30pm. The RHDC has recently recruited 211 class three and four employees under different departments violating the government quota for the freedom fighters and disabled, alleged FF Mahbub Alam Chowdhury, president of district unit command of Muktijoddha Sangsad. "Failing to retrieve the situation, the freedom fighters and the disabled in a last ditch effort took the move," Mahbub said. When contacted, Maniklal said only four candidates sought the quota privilege and three of them got appointed.
