Contempt rule on four dailies

The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a suo moto rule on the editors and five others of four national dailies asking them to explain why it should not draw up contempt charges against them for publishing allegedly contemptuous reports involving an additional judge.

A Division Bench of the HC comprising Justice MA Matin and Justice AFM Abdur Rahman issued the rule more than one month into publication of the reports.

The court asked editors of The Daily Star, New Age, Prothom Alo and Bhorer Kagoj, and the five others to appear in person before it at 10:00am on December 12 to give their explanations.

On October 31, The Daily Star, New Age and Bhorer Kagoj ran reports about detention for a few hours of an additional HC judge by law enforcers on charges of urinating on roadside.

The Prothom Alo published a post editorial on the matter on November 2.

The HC Registrar's Office had earlier sent letters to The Daily Star and Bhorer Kagoj asking for detailed information about their reports. The two dailies responded to that on November 27 and 28.
