One killed in Rab crossfire

A man with criminal records was killed while another person accompanying him injured reportedly in a shootout involving Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Keraniganj in the early hours yesterday.

The shooting, which left Sohrab Hossain, 28, of Sirajnagar dead, took place near a culvert at Sirajnagar under Taranager union of Keraniganj.

Sohrab stood accused in several cases including those for murders.

Nurul Hoque, 36, a brother-in-law of Sohrab, was shot in the stomach. He was undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Rab version
Following a tip-off that Sohrab was in a meeting with his accomplices, a team of Rab 4 raided Sirajnagar village at around 9:45pm, said Major Samad of Rab 4.

"Just when we moved in to nab him, his accomplices fired shots that injured Nurul Hoque, an aide to Sohrab," Major Samad added.

"We arrested Sohrab from the spot while three of his associates managed to drive off on two motorbikes."

Rab sources said they recovered one revolver and four rounds of ammunition from the scene.

Following leads from Sohrab under interrogation, the Rab team later went on an arms hunt in Baharchhari under Keraniganj at 1:40am.

"There when Sohrab's associates opened fire on us, we returned fire and at one stage Sohrab got shot and died on the spot," Major Samad said.

Sohrab was accused in four cases including three for robbery and one for murder with Keraniganj Police Station and several others including two for murders with Savar Police Station, Rab sources said.

Sohrab, who was evading capture by police, had fled to India. He returned to Bangladesh on Friday, said Major Samad.

Witness's Version
Nurul Hoque, son of Haji Abdul Ali of Shyamalshi under Dharaliapara union of Savar, told reporters at the DMCH that while on his way home from a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) meeting at Joynagar at around 4:00pm, he came across Sohrab.

He was talking to two of his friends on the culvert at Uttor Baherpur, when the Rab men pounced on them at around 6:00pm, he said.

"The Rab men straight way shot thrice at Sohrab," he said.

"I claimed myself innocent and pleaded not to shoot, but they turned a deaf ear and shot me in the stomach," he added.

"Rab men roamed for more than two and a half hours while I was bleeding bad," said Nurul. They took him to the DMCH at around 11:50pm.

Nurul claimed he had been in South Korea for 13 years and came to Dhaka during Ramadan. He was scheduled to fly back to South Korea on December 11.

He also claimed that Rab men seized his mobile phone and motorbike from the spot.

Keraniganj police sent Sohrab's body to Mitford Hospital for autopsy.

Locals of the area told The Daily Star that they heard gunshots at around 2:30pm.
