Thousands of civilians flee clashes in Congo: UN

Thousands of civilians were yesterday fleeing clashes near the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo town of Goma between Rwandan Hutu rebels and unidentified opponents, a senior UN official told AFP.

"Several thousand DRC civilians are fleeing to Kanya, Kanyabayunga and Kirumba," settlements about 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Goma, which lies on the Rwandan border, Bernard Le Flaive of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs told AFP by phone.

Le Flaive did not identify whom the rebels were fighting. There have been reports that Kigali has deployed troops in eastern DRC in recent days to take on Hutu rebels who fled to the vast country after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
