RAB and law and order

Four reports in your newspaper (25 and 26 Nov., 2004) have given me something good to write about, for a change. These are (A) The death of a top criminal, David, (B) The recovery of the Norwegian Ambassador's hand bag by the police, (C) The preference of criminals to stay in prison rather than facing the RAB and (D) Police standing up against BNP workers' bid to protest against David's death

May I point out that I do not believe in extra-judicial killing of top criminals euphemistically disguised as "death in cross fire". However, when crime rises to such proportions that it becomes the number one cause for impeding the development of a country, then it is time to take drastic measures. Thanks to the detailed report from your correspondent, my conscience does not have a problem saying this "smoking gun", with no fewer than seven murder cases against him, got what he deserved! May I point out that faced by similar crime waves, today's economic giants like the Chinese and the South Korean leaderships did not hesitate to take drastic measures against petty thieves, muggers, robbers and even greedy businessmen in order to get to where they are today. There is nothing immoral in sending a message to criminals.

The recovery of the mugged Norwegian Envoy's bag following the personal intervention of the Home Secretary is definitely cause for celebration. It shows that under proper leadership, even our corrupt and under funded police force can work miracles. As for the bad guys being petrified by the thought of the RAB, and wanting to stay behind bars, well that's not such a bad thing, is it?

The bigger question is why the governments in the past knowingly patronised criminals like David? From where I stand, isn't it fair to say that nothing has changed due to a transition from an autocratic government to a democratic one? Until the top political leadership shows the commitment to eliminating criminal elements from their own house, commemorating the death of the likes of Dr. Milon will simply be perceived as lip service. One of your reports also says that David had been warned by some high-ups to go into hiding. Will the ruling party leaders please respond to this allegation and expel those high ups from the party? I'm certain that if a stolen handbag can be recovered within a day from a city of 10 million dwellers, the PM should not have too much difficulty in figuring out who are betraying her from within her party.
