Development of Airport Road

We appreciate the work so far done by the communication ministry in improving the Airport Road to international standard under the DUTP. We understand that several new link roads will be built soon in East-West direction to improve the city road networks. This is commendable. I have three recommendations to make.

1. A 100 feet or more wide stretch of land starting from the Naval Headquarters to Mohakhali road intersection, located along the eastern side of the Airport Road, is currently being used for housing of R&H officials and staff. Unfortunately, the land is not being used for the purpose it was originally planned. Since the Airport Road is the main highway into the city, this land was meant for further widening of the road. Several slums and unkept houses along this important road are an eyesore. The ministry may take firm action to retrieve this land and use it for the purpose it was meant for or include it in its current DUTP city beautification programme.

2. The Airport Road and the Kamal Ataturk Road intersection needs to be sufficiently widened immediately. For this, two R&H houses on either side of the road should be demolished.

3. During the recent deluge two important road bridges linking Gulshan and beyond were submerged. These are near BRAC centre on Gulshan-Mohakhali Road and near Arong on Gulshan-Tejgaon road. The bridges should be widened, lengthened and reconstructed. The road level should be raised by several feet, as was done to the bridge on Banani- Gulshan road, after the floods of 1998. In any case these bridges should not be replaced by box culverts, which only obstruct water flow.
