Workshop on 'gender equality' ends
A three-day workshop ended in the city on Wednesday with a call for forming a National Commission for Women, says a press release .Khan Foundation and British High Commission co-organised the workshop titled 'Gender equality: A global challenge' at a city hotel. Khurshid Jahan Haque, minister for Women and Children Affairs, attended the concluding function as chief guest. Speaking at the workshop, Millie Sengupta, a representative of British High Commission, said her organisation has been carrying out many development activities in Bangladesh specially for the development of women. Advocate Rokhsana Khondker, executive director of Khan Foundation, said women should participate in policy-making process for their political empowerment. She urged the political parties to give nomination to women so that they could take part in direct election. Md Mortuza Hossain Munshi said this kind of workshop would contribute greatly to the advancement of women. He however said the women are yet to go a long way for their political empowerment. Government officials, teachers from different universities, women leaders, journalists, lawyers, NGO and civil society members, and elected representatives from the grassroots level attended the workshop.
