Students must be equipped with world standard education and skills to face the challenges of globalisation and contribute to the development of the country, State Minister for Education ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said yesterday.People are the most valuable resources of Bangladesh and quality education is a must to turn the huge population into human resources, he said at the inaugural ceremony of an education fair. The British Council organised the 'Qualifications@UK Fair 2004' on its premises in the city. A number of British educational institutions and some local institutions affiliated with the British universities are taking part in the two-day fair. Addressing the function as chief guest, Milon said the government has attached priority to education and information technology. He urged the students to work hard to make the best use of their talents and enhance the image of the country abroad. In today's world, the competitive edge of a country is not necessarily gained through manufacturing processes or technology but through education and development of its human resources, said British High Commissioner Anwar Choudhury. He said there is no substitute for internationally recognised qualifications that are validated externally. That is why the partnership approach adopted by the British Council is of such value to the Bangladeshis, he added. Referring to British government's 100 million dollar aid for education projects, he said, "You can rest assured that the United Kingdom as a friend of your country is equally committed to the development of Bangladesh." Dr June Rollinson, director of British Council, also spoke.
