'WB Immunity Bill needs more study'
Staff Correspondent
It requires more time to pass the World Bank (WB) Immunity Bill as the WB wants more immunity than those of the other international financial institutions, Law Minister Moudud Ahmed told BBC Bangla Service yesterday. The WB is willing to get immunity even from individuals, but such blanket immunity cannot be given. It needs more vetting, the minister said. "We do not find it reasonable to give immunity beyond what Bangladesh gave to the Asian Development Bank," the minister told BBC responding to a question. The present immunity given to the institution restricts the government to go to the court against the WB. All the other member states of the WB also gave the same type of immunity, Moudud added. The World Bank Immunity Bill placed in the ongoing parliament session might be placed again in the next session after more vetting, the minister said. The main opposition Awami League and the leftist political parties also opposed the bill.
