PM firm to carry on anticrime drive
BSS, Patuakhali
Prime Minister Khaleda Zia yesterday iterated her government's firm determination to continue anticrime drives to further improve the law and order."People are now living in peace following improvement of law and order situation all over the country," she said while addressing a public meeting at Mujaharuddin Degree College ground at Khepupara under Kalapara upazila of the district. Criticising the major opposition party for its activities, the prime minister said the opposition party does not want the people to live in peace. The party, she said, is trying to launch movement and create anarchy in the country. The prime minister said the past Awami League (AL) government had patronised the criminals. The former prime minister of the AL government had directed her party workers to take revenge by killing ten people instead of one dead body. After assuming power, the BNP-led alliance government has improved the law and order by taking a number of measures, the prime minister said. She said the government has formed Anti-Corruption Commission to curb corruption and nobody will be spared if found guilty. Presided over by Kalapara BNP President ABM Mosharraf Hossain, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed, Commerce Minister Altaf Hossain Choudhury, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Selima Rahman, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin and Prime Minister's Political Secretary Harris Chowdhury. Describing Bangladesh as a unique country of communal harmony, she said the government would like to develop this country with the support and cooperation of all people. Accusing the past Awami League government of crippling the economy, Khaleda said the coalition government has strengthened the national economy and carried out massive socioeconomic development programmes in the last three years. She also criticised the Awami League for not standing by the people during the recent floods. The prime minister said the party (AL) is now out to do harm to the country by enforcing hartals and creating anarchy without any issue. She said the AL is opposing the government only for the sake of opposition and creating chaos on the streets and also trying to do the same in the Jatiya Sangsad. The prime minister expressed optimism that the people would again reject the Awami League in the next general elections for its misdeeds. Responding to some local demands, the prime minister said that steps would be taken to expand rural electrification in phases in Kalapara upazila, complete the unfinished task of Patuakhali-Kuakata road, turn Kuakata into a modern tourist spot and raise the Kalapara Health Complex from existing 31-bed to 50-bed. The prime minister also visited the Kuakata sea beach and directed the authorities concerned to take all measures to develop it as a modern tourist spot. Speaking at a review meeting on the prospects of tourism at Parjatan motel, Holiday Homes, in Kuakata, the prime minister assured the tourism ministry and Patuakhali district administration of all cooperation for the development of the tourist spot. She also visited the nearby Rakhai Palli and talked to the members of the ethnic community.
