Rickshaw owners, workers threaten 48-hr strike

Owners and workers of rickshaws and rickshaw vans yesterday placed a six-point demand, including issuance of 43,000 new rickshaw licences.

They also threatened to call a 48-hour strike on December 18 and 19 if their demands are not met by December 16.

At a protest rally at Muktangan, Bangladesh Rickshaw-Van Malik-Sramik Sangram Parishad also demanded withdrawal of the ban on plying of rickshaw and rickshaw van on 10 city roads.

The government should rehabilitate the rickshawpullers before continuing to crack down on rickshaws, said Ali Akbar, president of the parishad.

Habibur Rahman, labour secretary of the Awami League, Nurul Islam, president of Trade Union Kendra, Sultan Ahmed, finance secretary of Jatiya Sramik League, and Tayab Ali, senior vice-president of Jatiyatabadi Rickshaw Malik Dal, also spoke.
