UP Forum demands withdrawal of circulars
Women's policy committee formed

The National Union Parishad Forum (NUPF) has formed a 23-member women's policy committee to raise the problems of women representatives of Union Parishads and placed a 12-point demand.

The NUPF announced that it would hold a rally in December if the government do not meet the demands.

The forum elected the members of the committee at a two-day workshop that ended at the LGED Bhaban in the city yesterday.

The participants also identified problems of the women UP members and discussed the ways to solve those.

The Local Government Initiative, Academy for Educational Development (AED) and National Democratic Institute (NDI) organised the workshop in collaboration with the USAID. The workshop was aimed at strengthening the local government institutions.

At a press conference yesterday, the Forum leaders demanded that the government should withdraw the circulars which are inconsistent with the UP Ordinance 1983, the members of parliament should not interfere in the development activities of the UP and scope for work of women members should be specified.

Nargis Akhtar, chairperson of Women's Policy Committee, said that the chairmen do not give much responsibility to the women members and cooperate with them.

William J Cartier, LGI chief of party, Zarina Rahman Khan, LGI deputy chief of party, Golam Sarwar, president of NUPF, Salma Akhtar, general secretary of women's policy committee were also present.
