Bashar returns to lead MSC

Pakistani batsman Taufeeq Umar flew in the city yesterday to boost the frail Abahani batting ahead of their second Premier cricket league match against Young Pegasus. The Lahore left-hander, who missed Pakistan's tour of Australia, will make his Dhaka debut today at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar is all set to return to action as the leaguer resumes after a day's break for his club side Mohammedan after missing the first game against Orient SC. Bashar has not played any competitive match since injuring his left toe in the second one-day international against New Zealand at the Bangabandhu National Stadium last month. He will lead Mohammedan against Indira Road KC at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium. "I am fully fit to play the league. I am feeling excited because I will go into the home series against India with two league matches under the belt," said Bashar. Umar's arrival came as a big relief in the Abahani tent after an uninspiring player-acquisition in the transfers last month. The 23-year-old was originally scheduled to play for the popular Dhanmondi-based club in the opening match against Bangladesh Biman on Saturday but could not arrive in time due to the death of a close family member. Abahani lost that match by 34 runs despite dismissing the national flag carriers cheaply. "We lost the match against Biman because of an inexperienced batting line-up. But the inclusion of Umar will certainly bolster our batting," said Abahani coach Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury. Jalal believed that Umar's off-spin would also be handy apart from his batting. Umar has scored 444 runs in his 18 one-day appearances for Pakistan. The southpaw however holds a better records in Tests, scoring 1610 runs at average of 42.36 in 22 matches.
