50 hurt as JCD, Shibir clash at IU

Some 50 leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) were hurt in a clash at Islamic University (IU) yesterday.The clash occurred over organising a cultural programme to celebrate the silver jubilee of the IU. Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, also chancellor of the IU, inaugurated the two-day programme on the campus. Campus sources said activist of the ICS, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were performing Islamic songs when some JCD activists asked them to quit the stage. The activists of the JCD, student wing of BNP, demanded popular songs instead of gazals, as many signers from in and outside the campus were waiting to perform. Heated arguments between the JCD and ICS soon precipitated into a clash. Both sides used various lethal weapons during the clash that lasted for hours and left over 50 injured. The IU vice-chancellor, proctor, student advisor along with police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
