Security beefed up in diplomatic enclave

Security in the diplomatic enclave of Gulshan and adjoining areas has been beefed up after the Norwegian ambassador in Dhaka was mugged last week.

"Already three mobile patrols and five foot patrols have been deployed in the area," said Golam Rasul, deputy commissioner (north), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The measure was taken at the directive of the home ministry.

Each foot patrol is comprised of three armed policemen while each mobile patrol has a vehicle, and four cops including an officer. They patrol the area from Gulshan Shooting Club up to Pakistan Embassy and from Gulshan Bridge up to Baridhara.

The morning mobile patrols start their rounds from 5:00am continue until 9:00am. The afternoon shift begins at 4:30 and finishes at 10:00pm.

"The timing has been fixed in such a way that the movement of diplomats and other dignitaries residing around the areas are not hindered by incidents like that happened with the Norwegian Ambassador," said the deputy commissioner.

The police said three criminals waylaid Ambassador Aud Lise Norheim, who was on a morning walk near the Gulshan Club, and mugged her of her belongings, at around 7:00 in the morning on November 24.Two days later, police nabbed the crooks.

"We arrested one of the criminals, Mohammad Abbas, at his residence and acting on his confessional statement we caught his accomplices Noor Alam alias Titu," said Mizanur Khan, a sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station.

Khan and his force continued raiding the area and later arrested another criminal, Sayeedul Islam alias Babu alias Nannu.

The law-enforcers recovered the ambassador's handbag, credit card, Nordic Club membership card, diplomatic identity card, notebook, mobile phone set and keys from the possession of the muggers.

The diplomatic enclave has long been covered by dedicated patrol of Gulshan police along with 10 check-posts and special patrols at 11 different points including Amtoli, Mohakhali, Gulshan -1, and the shooting club.

Golam Rasul said they used to deploy one patrol in the area before the November 24 incident. "Now we have beefed up security and called in reserved policemen to ensure foolproof security to the diplomats and other dignitaries."

The deputy commissioner mentioned that his office was never informed about the daily morning strolls of the Norwegian ambassador. "If it was known to us, we would have done our best to ensure her safety," he added.

"This is definitely a very pleasing news since after this, criminals would think twice before committing a crime in this area," said a diplomat on condition of anonymity.
