Body to create awareness against cruelty to animals formed


An organisation styled as 'Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Bangladesh' was launched in the city recently.

The society comprising a group of animal lovers has been formed to create public awareness against cruelty to animals, birds and reptiles.

An 11-member executive committee has also been formed with Shirin Hasanat Islam and Izzat (Shama) Shamser as chairperson and general secretary respectively for three years.

The society has been registered with the government.

A spokesman for the organisation said the 22-point agenda of the society included enactment of new laws where existing legislation is inadequate to pursue its goal, setting up of healthcare centre for injured or ailing animals, and registration of pet owners.

The society will also work with other non-government organisations to pursue the government and the donor agencies to help implement its objectives.

"We will soon undertake steps to have a survey of pet and other animals," the spokesman added.
