LDF threatens movement

Left Democratic Front (LDF) yesterday threatened to launch countrywide movement if the government grants immunity to the World Bank (WB).

Addressing a rally at Muktangon in the city, the front leaders said the bank wants immunity from the government as it has been carrying out many harmful activities in the country for long.

They said the WB influenced the government to denationalise some commercial banks and shut down many mills and factories including the Adamjee Jute Mills.

"Giving an immunity to the WB is a violation of the fundamental rights of the people" said front Coordinator Ruhin Hossain Prince.

He called upon the government to uphold the country's constitution by preventing the bank from enjoying the immunity.

President of Bangladesh Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon, General Secretary of Bangladesh Communist Party Mujahidul Islam Selim, Left Democratic Front leaders Shahidullah Chowdhury, Dilip Barua, Haider Akber Khan, and Nurul Hasan also attended the rally.

Later, they marched towards the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in a procession to protest the government's initiative to give immunity to the bank.

Police however intercepted the procession in front of Matsya Bhaban.
