Sweepers protest recruitment from other community

Sweepers in Rangpur town on Monday protested alleged corruption by the Civil Surgeon's office in appointment of sweepers in eight upazila health complexes.

The sweepers earlier requested the Civil Surgeon to appoint 19 sweepers from the Harijan community. But the Civil Surgeon took in only six from the community and the rest from other communities, sources said.

On Monday, a group of about 40 sweepers brought out a procession in the town and chanting various slogans. After the procession, they went to the civil surgeon office and littered the entrance corridor with human feces.

In the afternoon some sweepers at a press conference at Rangpur Press Club alleged that the Civil Surgeon's office appointed sweepers from other communities by taking bribe while the Harijan community, which mainly does the sweeping, is passing hard days for lack of job.

They demanded cancellation of the appointments.
