AL demands redeployment of SSF for Hasina

The Awami League yesterday demanded redeployment of Special Security Forces (SSF) for the security of Opposition Leader and AL President Sheikh Hasina who has received a series of death threats recently.

The recent death threat by e-mail sent to an English daily must not be ignored, said AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil at a press conference yesterday.

"There is no chance at all to take the threat lightly as it is linked to the August 21 grenade attack on an AL rally," he added.

Jalil said the BNP-led coalition government after assuming the office has withdrawn SSF for Hasina, jeopardising her security.

"After the withdrawal of SSF, the AL chief has survived four assassination attempts but the government took no step to ensure her safety," he said.

The government's indifference to death threat against Hasina has also encouraged the attackers, Jalil said.

On the other hand, the government awarded punishment to those who threatened to blow up 'Hawa Bhaban' and the Prime Minister's Office, he added.

AL leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim alleged that the government wants to cling to power by killing the opposition leader.

Party leaders Tofail Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Motia Chowdhury, Suranjit Sengupta and Obaidul Quader were present at the press briefing.
