Staff Correspondent
Brac, a leading non-government organisation, has released TK 1.25 crore under an emergency programme to feed one lakh families in six northern districts hit hard by monga, a near-famine situation.Of the total amount, Brac donated TK one crore and the rest TK 25 lakh came as donor assistance, says a press release. Under the programme, each family of 29 thanas will receive five kilos of rice and one kilo of lentil for a week. Out of these 29 thanas, 21 were also affected by the recent floods. Brac has taken another programme with the assistance of the World Food Programme to feed 22,650 families of these thanas. Under the programme, Brac will distribute 15 kilos of rice, 3.7 kilos of lentil, 1.5 litres of cooking oil and .75 kilo of salt per family for 15 days. As a long-term measure to combat the monga, Brac is to launch a 'cash for work programme' at a cost of TK 50 lakh soon. Earlier, Brac appealed for TK 60 crore out of which it has already received TK 8 crore from the Netherlands. It is expected that Brac would receive the rest of the amount within a month. The monga has taken a serious tern this year as a result of prolonged and recurring floods which have damaged crops, left people jobless and led to the price hike of essentials.
